This photographic series was commissioned by FotoDocument as part of its inaugural programme of photo essays exploring positive environmental solutions. The project documents the rapidly developing renewable energy industry in the United Kingdom and the technologies helping the country transition away from fossil fuels.
The photographs focus on a range of renewable energy infrastructures including wind, tidal, hydro and solar power. Together they reflect the growing role of these technologies in the UK’s energy mix following the country’s commitment in 2009 to the European Union Renewable Energy Directive, which set a target for the UK to generate 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
Photographed using a large-format camera, the series emphasises the industrial scale and engineering processes behind these emerging technologies, documenting a sector that is increasingly filling the void left by the decline of traditional manufacturing industries.
The work was first exhibited as a large-scale public installation at Brighton railway station during the Brighton Fringe in 2012, displayed across forty panels along the station’s east wall.
Note: The UK ultimately exceeded this target, with renewable sources accounting for approximately 16.7% of total energy consumption by 2020.
